Cape Cod Fishing Reports

FISH EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!

This is our first fishing report of the 2008 season. We made it through the winter, we seem to be having an actual spring here on the Cape and the fish are in! This past week things have really started to heat up.

Yesterday Tyler weighed in a 33.5 lb Striper caught by Billy VanLeeuwen.
Billy VanLeuwen's 33.5 lb Striper
Nice fish! Billy was in an undisclosed location on the North side using fresh mackerel.

The mackerel are reported to be pretty thick on the north side and Bill will attest that they make a great bait.

Bone Hill has also been producing some nice bass. A 44 incher was pulled out the other day using 4 inch swim shads. The two fishermen proceeded to tell me that they had caught and released four other keepers.

The canal is also a hot spot and has had massive schools of bunker on both ends. Look for these schools of bunker and snag a few for live bait. A 42 inch bass was caught near the herring run. We are now in the third year of not being allowed to take herring and fisherman have turned to storm shads to produce keepers.

Here on the South side the blues are in. Any beach along Nantucket Sound has been a good spot for catching fish. Oregon is loaded with big blues as well as keeper bass. Throw just about anything at them and you should hook up. Florescent Orange Bounders, Rangers or Ballistic missiles were a sure thing a couple of days ago for blues.

The three bays area in Osterville/Cotuit is loaded with bait and striped bass. Sports Port's go-to guy, Tyler, hooked into his first keeper of the year the other night. Tyler was fishing in Cotuit and using his trusty black bomber. He also reported that the fly fisherman next to him were slamming the bass all night. The fly fishing crowd have been hooking up more frequently than the spin-casters, due to the fact that they can match the hatch.

We are still waiting for reports on sea bass, scup, and fluke.

We have had mixed reports on the squid in the area. No reports of squid in Hyannis harbor have been talked about.....YET! However, we had a few customers that were squidding off of Osterville and loaded a few 5 gallon buckets in just hours. Mike has been fishing over on the Vineyard for the week and said huge schools of squid have been coming in the harbor at night. He also landed a 10 lb blue this afternoon.

Trout fishing has been great and die hard freshwater guys have been pumped with the small crowds at the ponds. This is the time of year that people forget about freshwater due to the start of saltwater. However, we have had reports saying that numerous trout have been caught at Hathaway's pond using spoons and live shiners.

Get out on the water because the fishing is awesome!
